1918 aerial photograph of mine craters at Combres Hill, in northern France, a scene of active fighting for four years. These craters are 200 feet in diameter and are still present.

At the beginning of World War I, the Allies relied on maps of France that had been made during the reign of Napoleon more than one hundred years before.
