Just past midnight on Monday, March 12, 1888, New York’s unseasonably mild temperatures dropped rapidly, and the heavy rains that had come with the warmth turned into snow.

Sustained winds grew to 45 miles per hour.

And the storm whipped the City for a day and a half, dropping more than 20 inches of snow that produced 50-foot snow drifts.
