On this day in 1968, SGT Joseph Ewing Smith, a 22-year-old medic in an Army Special Forces unit, died from wounds suffered while on a combat mission near Châu Đốc, a city in the Mekong Delta region of South Vietnam near the Cambodian border.
He was hit by a booby-trapped grenade.
