the division sowed by ignorance

Ulysses S. Grant addressed a reunion of Civil War veterans from Tennessee in September 1875, during his sixth year as President.

While the veterans hailed him as their victorious former commander, Grant used the occasion to speak about the imperative of universal, secular public education for both Black and White children.
