**The Paradise Roof Garden** rooftop theater, built by Oscar Hammerstein I in 1899, covered an entire block at 44th and Broadway in New York City.

In the late 1800s, New York’s vaudeville theater impresarios built outdoor venues on the roofs of their buildings to generate revenue during the warm summer months when their theaters were closed.
