On this day in 1884, the Providence Grays (NL) won the first inter-league post-season championship contest against the New York Metropolitans (A.Assoc.) in a three-game rout.
The newspapers called the games “the World Series.”
The series pitted ace pitcher Charles “Old Hoss” Radbourn for the Grays against Tim O’Keefe for the Mets.
