Photo of the Day

Let's party.
1

A ‘take-no-prisoners’ bison hunting party in Denver, 1873. Note the size of the bullets on these guys’ belts and the bison head on the far right.

The Republican Party of Jefferson County, Washington, 1888. Three more decades before women get the vote, so, of course, it’s all men.

Wisconsin yachting party on Lake Winnebago, 1892.

Somber wedding party of Austrian immigrants in Ely, Minnesota, 1911. Note the guy with the cigar seated on the far left. And then there’s the bride’s far-apart shoes.

Little Ida’s baby party, Jefferson County, Washington, 1901. Note the exhausted mom at the top of the stairs.

Pike’s Peak coasting party, 1906. These people have ridden a train to the summit, then boarded this hand car for a gravity-driven ride back down the mountainside.

Colorado fishing party, 1910. All of the women have waders except for the lady in the white dress. And note the little girl at the back of the line.

Connecticut Halloween party, 1910. Several guys in blackface. I can’t figure out the two-headed angel in the back, left.

Senior class party, Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania, 1911. Two guys in aprons… there’s a story there.

White-tie wedding party at the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, 1915. Enormous floral centerpieces. Must have cost Dad a fortune.

Canning party, Georgia, 1916. My German grandmother and her sisters used to can tomatoes and peaches in the late summer. She used long tongs to boil Ball glass jars and lids, and there was something about wax which I have forgotten.

Field party of Wisconsin geology students and their professor, 1918.

50th wedding anniversary party, Massachusetts, 1920. The bride is on the right. The small, happy woman on the left might be the maid-of-honor. She saw how it all turned out and seems to have gotten the last laugh.

I’ll see you tomorrow.
