And the old man, Edward Steichen, took their pictures.

No glory shots.

Lunch aboard a US submarine.

Hard work.

Monotony.

Fatigue.

Sometimes, a little fun.

Steichen was 62.

His approach to combat photography drew from his decades as a New York celebrity and fashion photographer.
