At the end of World War II, Germany’s cities lay in ruins and its women outnumbered men by about seven million.

So, the task of removing the rubble of war fell to the Trümmerfrau [“rubble women”], ages 15 to 50, who worked to clear the roads, pavements, and the remains of buildings too damaged to be repaired.
