The heavy rains of early March had passed and the night of Friday, the fourteenth, was cold and clear.

Spotters searched the skies over Leeds with binoculars, expecting more Luftwaffe.

They had always returned when unsettled weather finally cleared, and tonight would be no different.

The Luftwaffe raid began at 9:00 pm.
