Photojournalist Lewis Hine took this photograph in late 1911 in the home of textile mill workers in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Once the whaling capital of America, New Bedford was then in its second economic boom, boasting seventy textile mills that employed more than 41,000 people.
Most were new immigrants, who lived in three-story tenements mill owners…
