Moving the Brighton Beach Hotel, 1888.The Brighton Beach Hotel, Coney Island, with luxury accommodations for 5,000, opened in 1878. Ten years later, beach erosion had brought high tides to its front door, so tracks were laid beneath the structure and six steam locomotives moved it 500 feet back. It was the largest building moved during the 19th century.3. Frank SinatraFrank Sinatra: in 1918, at age 3; in 1938, singing at the Rustic Cabin in Englewood Cliffs, NJ; with Judy Garland in May 1944; with Bob Hope in his televion debut, 1950.4. The Hayden Survey group in Wyoming, 1870s.Ferdinand Hayden and his geophysical survey party collected data in Wyoming that would convince Congress to create Yellowstone National Park in 1872. Hayden worked in the West for 30 years, and his various survey teams compiled 50 volumes on the geology, botany, and zoology of the West. His extensive fossil collection is held in the Smithsonian.5. Disney animator produces “Tokio Kid” posters, WWII.Jack Campbell worked at the Douglas Aircraft Company on behalf of the federal government, creating propaganda posters to enhance worker productivity. The posters were effective and were sent to other military contractors. Douglas Aircraft employed 160,000 people and produced 30,000 aircraft during the war years, the most famous being the B-17 Flying Fortress.6.
