The Immigration Act of 1924 brought dramatic changes to the American immigration system.

Asian immigrants were barred.

Quotas were placed on the number of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe.

Total annual immigration was capped at a number far below previous yearly averages.

The US Border Patrol and a visa system for US visitors were created.

Children from the Lapland region of Sweden and a German stowaway at Ellis Island, 1905. Immigrants from northern and western Europe were favored under the 1924 Act.
