We think of city directories as “telephone books,” but directories came along well before Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone in 1876.

These are pages from the New-York Directory of 1786.

They contain an alphabetical list of New York City residents, their occupations and addresses.

[E.g., Barham, Mrs., tavern-keeper, 18 Broadway.]
