Cowboy photographer Erwin Smith, who chronicled life on the open range, took these pictures on a Texas night in 1908: supper at the chuck wagon; clog dancing to a lone guitar; hand-rolling a bedtime cigarette; and waking the night rider who, in the days before fences, would keep the cattle herd together while the camp slept.
