Lincoln delivers his first inaugural address, March 4, 1861.

When the Civil War erupted in April 1861, there were 1,080 commissioned officers then serving in the US Army.

Each had sworn an oath to “bear true allegiance to the United States of America,” and “observe and obey the orders of the President of the United States.”¹
