Those supplies and support from the USA and Canada certainly kept the UK going in holding out against Hitler and the Nazis, although by the end of the war the UK owed the two countries £21 billion. We finally paid off that debt on 31 December 2006 with a last payment of circa $83m to the USA and about $23.6m to Canada.

If I had been in charge, I would have forgiven the debt years earlier.

The British effort aided US security interests, a point which many in America still struggle to understand.

No worries Brenda and can I say as an amateur historian I much enjoy reading your pieces and the excellent points you make in drawing parallels with the present. And we in Europe must never forget the ultimate sacrifice of all those American, Canadian and many, many other countries' service personnel both in the Great War and then again in the Second World War and the liberation of Europe.
